This guide covers the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council, not every nursing board worldwide. NMC’s accepted language-test evidence is IELTS Academic or OET. TOEFL is not listed as an accepted test for this pathway. Read the NMC requirements.

These are the section requirements on the checked NMC page. A university course or another regulator may set different targets.
Combining two sittings has conditions
NMC permits eligible results from two sittings of the same test, within 12 months of each other and within two years of assessment. Both sittings must cover all four skills and meet the applicable minimum floors. You cannot combine IELTS with OET or assume an individual skill retake qualifies. Use the NMC calculator and detailed combining rules before booking a retake.
Choose by evidence, not an easier-test promise
Try one unseen Writing task and one Speaking task from each accepted test. Record how well you understood the instructions, organized the answer, and used the available time. IELTS Academic suits practice with academic texts and broader topics; OET focuses on healthcare communication. Familiar medical vocabulary helps only when you can use it clearly for the task.
For a nursing role play, practice explaining a plan in plain English, acknowledging the patient’s concern, and checking understanding. For IELTS, practice developing an answer beyond a short statement without drifting away from the question. Choose one accepted exam and build a consistent routine around it.

Should I prepare for IELTS and OET at the same time?
Usually choose the accepted exam that fits your application and current skills. Comparing a sample task is useful; splitting every study session across two formats is less focused.
Can I use an AI practice score in my application?
No. Submit the official evidence requested by NMC. Practice feedback helps you prepare.
