IELTS reports Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking, and an overall band on its 0–9 scale. The overall result is the four-skill average, rounded to a whole or half band. An average ending in .25 rounds to the next half band; .75 rounds to the next whole band. Read IELTS’s official scoring explanation.
Check Academic versus General Training
Academic and General Training share Listening and Speaking but have different Reading and Writing tests. Academic is the relevant starting point for higher education and many professional pathways. Confirm the requested version and any UKVI or delivery-mode condition with the recipient.
Practice the skill behind the band
For Reading, underline the evidence that supports your chosen answer after completing the timed task. If you cannot find it, record whether you guessed from general knowledge or misread the question. For Listening, review the exact phrase you missed and the reason: spelling, number, paraphrase, or loss of concentration.
For Writing, plan a clear response before adding complex language. IELTS lists four assessment areas: task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1. In Speaking, developing a relevant answer is more useful than filling time with a memorized introduction.
Keep your target specific
Make a section-by-section goal sheet from your recipient’s official policy. If Writing is the only gap, spend more time planning, reviewing, and rewriting fresh Writing tasks, while keeping a shorter maintenance routine for the other skills.
Use feedback to identify a change you can make on the next attempt: a clearer position, better paragraph order, or fewer repeated errors. Do not treat an AI band estimate as an official result or as confirmation that a regulator will accept your evidence.

Can a high overall band replace a required section minimum?
Only the receiving organization can set that policy. If it lists section minimums, check each one separately.

Should I memorize a full essay?
