Use your profession’s tasks

OET’s Reading and Listening are shared across professions; Writing and Speaking use profession-specific healthcare tasks. The overview lists 42 questions each for Reading and Listening, one Writing task, and two Speaking role plays. Check the official test overview and delivery options.

Choose the profession required by your registration pathway. Nursing role plays and Pharmacy letters should not be treated as interchangeable evidence of preparation.

Read the scores without assuming a universal pass

OET gives a separate 0–500 result, in ten-point increments, with a letter grade for each sub-test. There is no single overall grade replacing the four results. The receiving organization chooses its accepted minimums. See the official results explanation.

The UK NMC and US FPGEC are different recipients. Read the relevant linked guide rather than borrowing a score requirement from another profession or country.

Practice a useful healthcare letter

Before writing, identify the reader, the purpose, and the action the reader needs to take. Select case notes that help that reader; including every note can make the letter harder to use. After writing, check whether the opening makes the purpose clear and whether the sequence supports safe understanding.

For example, a referral needs the reason for referral and relevant current details. Do not add facts that the case notes do not provide. Review sentence accuracy after you have checked purpose and relevance.

Practice listening to the patient

In a role play, respond to what the patient has actually said. Acknowledge a concern, explain the next step in plain language, and check understanding. Record your attempt, then ask whether your response sounded like a conversation or a speech that ignored the patient.

Clinical vocabulary alone is not enough. Work on understandable explanations, relevant questions, and a clear closing plan. Use Fasiho practice for skill development; the profession’s regulator determines whether your official OET evidence is acceptable.
