TOEFL, IELTS, or OET: choose the exam your goal accepts
Choose one accepted test before investing in preparation, using your destination and task performance.
Applies to: Study, healthcare, and professional pathways
Acceptance comes before preference
Begin with the university, regulator, or credentialing service that will receive your result. Write down its accepted exams, versions, delivery modes, and effective dates. A friend’s success with an exam does not show that your own application accepts it.
For US pharmacy, consult the FPGEC guide and its upcoming policy dates. For UK nursing, use the NMC guide. For university admission, check your program directly. These are different decisions even when two applicants work in healthcare.
Compare the task experience
| Exam | Practice focus | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | Academic and everyday English tasks | TOEFL practice |
| IELTS Academic | Academic Reading and Writing with broader Listening and Speaking | IELTS practice |
| OET | Healthcare English; profession-specific Writing and Speaking | OET practice |
The task format can help you choose between exams your recipient already accepts. It cannot override an acceptance rule.
Try a small comparison before committing
- Take one unseen task in your weakest skill from each accepted option.
- Record where you struggled: understanding the task, organizing the response, vocabulary, delivery, or timing.
- Compare the work needed to reach the verified section targets.
- Choose one exam for the next study block and book only after confirming the required format and location.
A smaller, consistent plan often gives you clearer evidence of improvement than switching formats whenever a task feels difficult.
Use the right guide for your goal
Fasiho’s article library separates official requirements from our study suggestions. A date on a guide tells you when the sources were checked; it does not guarantee that a regulator has not changed its rule since. Reopen the linked official page before your final booking or application.
Choose the corresponding exam practice page after checking acceptance. Review feedback in the context of the response you actually gave, and use official results for formal applications.
Questions & answers
Which exam is easiest?
There is no reliable universal answer. Acceptance, your skills, and the particular task format matter more than an easier-test label.
Do I need to purchase preparation for all three exams?
Usually focus on the exam your current goal accepts. Consider another only when you have a separate application or a clear reason to change.
Are all Fasiho articles official policy?
No. They are independent guides with official source links. The receiving organization’s policy controls eligibility.
