TOEFL for pharmacists: FPGEC scores and 2026 changes

Start with your FPGEC application pathway

Before setting a study target, identify which NABP application rules apply to you. English proficiency is one part of FPGEC certification; certification itself does not grant a state pharmacy license. Keep the language-test requirement separate from the education review, FPGEE, and your state board’s later steps. Check NABP’s certification pathway.

Current TOEFL section targets

The October 2026 NABP bulletin gives these minimums for the current pathway and TOEFL tests taken on or after January 21, 2026:

Older applications can follow different standards. Applications submitted before January 1, 2020 have special rules in the bulletin; do not apply this table to that group without checking. Read the official score tables and application exceptions.

Upcoming changes are not today’s rules

November 1, 2026: NABP will allow MyBest scores for acceptance into the 2027 FPGEE administration. Until that policy applies, plan for the current single-sitting requirement.

January 11, 2027: OET Pharmacy results from eligible tests on or after this date become an alternative. Earlier OET tests will not qualify. OET minimum scores are still pending in the checked bulletin. See NABP’s October 6 announcement.

Confirm the venue before paying

NABP requires an approved test-center setting in a member or associate-member jurisdiction. TOEFL Home Edition is not accepted for FPGEC. Verify your exact venue against the bulletin before booking. Check the location rules.

Build your practice around section gaps

Write down four separate targets. A strong Reading result does not resolve a Speaking shortfall. If your official Speaking score is below the requirement, practice answering the actual question with one clear reason and a specific example, then listen to your recording for missing words and unclear delivery.

For Writing, check whether your email addresses every requested point and whether your discussion contribution adds a supported idea. Keep an error log: task omissions, unclear examples, sentence errors, and time management need different practice.
