TOEFL and IELTS for university: find your actual score target
How to check overall and section requirements, with a current ASU undergraduate example rather than a universal admission score.
Applies to: University admission · program-specific requirements
Start with the exact degree and intake
Search the official admissions page for your university, degree level, program, and intended intake. A general undergraduate requirement may differ from a graduate program, nursing course, or teaching-assistantship requirement. Also check whether an English-language exemption applies to your own education history.
IELTS Academic is the version intended for higher education. Confirm the accepted test version and delivery method before paying. OET acceptance for healthcare registration does not establish its acceptance for a university degree.
A verified example: ASU undergraduate admission
As checked on October 8, 2026, Arizona State University’s general undergraduate requirement for TOEFL taken on or after January 21, 2026 is an overall 3.5 with 3.5 in each section. Its general IELTS Academic overall requirement is 6.0. These are ASU general undergraduate examples, not recommendations for every university or program.
ASU lists higher requirements for selected programs and does not accept IELTS General Training for this requirement. Read ASU’s full table and program exceptions.
Build a comparison sheet
| Field | What to check |
|---|---|
| Degree / intake | Exact course, level, campus, and admission year |
| Exam | Accepted version and delivery method |
| Score | Overall minimum plus each section minimum |
| Results policy | Validity, combining or retake acceptance, and report delivery |
| Evidence | Official URL and date checked |
If a page has conflicting scales or an unclear section rule, ask admissions which requirement applies to your test date. Keep their written answer with your application notes.
Turn the requirement into a study target
Compare your latest official section results with the target sheet. Prioritize the gap that could make the application ineligible, rather than spending all your time on the skill you enjoy most. Set a weekly plan with one timed task, one careful review, and one retry that addresses the same weakness.
Use fresh prompts to check whether you can apply the improvement independently. Leave enough time for the official exam and the institution’s reporting process; a practice-platform result cannot replace an official report.
Questions & answers
Is IELTS 6.0 enough for every university?
No. The example here is ASU’s general undergraduate rule. Your program may require a higher overall result or section scores.
Can a nursing admission score qualify me for nurse registration?
Not automatically. Course admission and professional registration are separate processes.
Should I book both TOEFL and IELTS?
First check which test your shortlisted programs accept. Usually one accepted exam with a focused preparation plan is the practical starting point.
