What changed

For TOEFL iBT from January 21, 2026, ETS reports four section scores and an overall score on a 1–6 scale in half-point steps. During the two-year transition, reports also include a comparable overall 0–120 score. See ETS’s score explanation.

Read the overall result correctly

The overall 1–6 score is the section-score average rounded to the nearest half band. ETS’s example of an average of 5.25 produces 5.5. A comparable overall score is not a precise conversion of every individual section result. ETS does not set one universal pass mark; receiving institutions decide their requirements.

Make four targets, not just one

Imagine an application requires an overall result plus a minimum in each section. A learner who only watches the overall result might overlook a section gap. Write each requirement beside the matching official score, then decide what to practice first.

For Reading, classify mistakes as missing evidence, vocabulary in context, or time pressure. For Listening, note whether the problem was understanding a phrase, tracking a speaker’s purpose, or remembering a detail. For Writing and Speaking, check task relevance before improving sentence variety. Different problems need different drills.

Use estimates for study decisions

A Fasiho practice estimate is feedback on practice evidence. It is not an ETS score report, an admissions decision, or proof of eligibility. Follow the limitations shown with your feedback, particularly when an assessment uses a transcript rather than verified delivery evidence.

Track patterns across fresh tasks. If the same weakness repeats, build a focused practice block around it. If feedback varies sharply, check whether the task difficulty, recording quality, or response length changed before concluding that your ability changed.

Questions & answers

My university still lists a 0–120 score. What should I do?

Your transitional official report includes a comparable overall score. Ask the institution how it applies its listed requirement and any section minimums.

Does a 5.0 practice estimate guarantee a 5.0 official result?

No. Practice assessment and the official exam have different evidence, conditions, and scoring processes.

How long are official TOEFL scores valid?

ETS states two years from the test date. Check the receiving organization’s application timing as well.
