TOEFL iBT 2026 Listening: replies, conversations, announcements, and talks
Listen for purpose, speaker intent, and changes of plan instead of copying every word.
Applies to: TOEFL iBT · 2026 task format
Know the task
ETS lists four 2026 tasks: Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, and Listen to an Academic Talk. Build familiarity with all four. The real test can vary in item count and timing; a practice response countdown is not a universal ETS time allowance.
A practical approach
- Choose a Response: identify what the speaker is doing: asking for help, inviting, checking information, or making a suggestion. Choose a socially and logically appropriate reply.
- Conversation: track the problem, proposed options, and final decision. Use short notes such as “problem → option rejected → new plan.”
- Announcement: note who is affected, what changes, when it happens, and what listeners must do.
- Academic Talk: follow the central idea and how examples support it. Note relationships such as cause, contrast, and sequence rather than attempting a transcript.
Worked example: original Fasiho practice
Original mini-script: “I was going to return the projector today, but the media desk closes before my seminar ends. Could you drop it off if I leave it in your office?”
Suitable reply: “Sure—leave it by my desk, and I’ll take it over.” The speaker requests a favor; a reply about the projector’s picture quality does not address that request.
Useful notes: “desk closes early / seminar late / asks colleague to return.” The timing conflict explains the request. Copying the whole sentence would add work without clarifying the relationship.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Matching an option to a repeated word while ignoring speaker intent.
- Keeping the first plan in your notes after the speakers change it.
- Writing so much that you stop listening.
- Opening a transcript before making an independent first attempt.
Your next practice session
Listen to one fresh item without the transcript. Answer, then replay for review and mark the exact words supporting the answer. Read the transcript only after that second listen. Finish by explaining why one distractor is wrong. For a talk, write a one-sentence main idea and two supporting points.
Questions & answers
Should I take notes on every short reply question?
Often the communicative purpose matters more than extensive notes. Practice retaining the short utterance and responding to its meaning.
Is 20 seconds after audio the official rule for every item?
Do not assume so. Follow the real test instructions. Fasiho countdowns are practice settings unless explicitly verified against the particular official task.
How should I use transcripts?
Use them after an independent attempt to diagnose missed sounds, vocabulary, or meaning. Then test yourself on fresh audio without the transcript.
