TOEFL iBT 2026 Reading: practical strategies for all three tasks

Build words from context, read everyday messages accurately, and support academic answers with evidence.

Know the task

The 2026 Reading task types are Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage. ETS notes that test time and item counts can vary as the test adapts. Prepare for the task types rather than assuming every form has an identical passage count.

The techniques below are Fasiho study suggestions. They do not reproduce ETS routing or scoring rules.

A practical approach

  1. Complete the Words: read the whole sentence before filling a gap. Decide whether the missing word needs to be a noun, verb, adjective, or connector. Combine the visible letters with meaning and grammar; reread the completed sentence.
  2. Daily Life: identify the writer, audience, purpose, and action required. Circle changes, exceptions, deadlines, and conditions. A familiar word in an option is not evidence that the option is correct.
  3. Academic Passage: summarize each paragraph in a few words. For a detail question, locate the supporting sentence. For inference, ask what the evidence permits rather than adding outside knowledge.

Worked example: original Fasiho practice

Notice: “The study room will close at 5 p.m. on Friday for repairs. Students with evening reservations may use Room 12 instead. Regular hours resume Saturday.”

Question: What should a student with a Friday evening reservation do?

Answer: Use Room 12. The notice offers an alternative for that specific group. “Come back Saturday” repeats a true detail but does not answer what the student should do on Friday evening.

Word drill: “The new timetable is fle_____ enough to accommodate evening classes.” Complete it as flexible: the meaning, visible beginning, and adjective position all fit.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing an answer because it sounds generally reasonable without finding textual support.
  • Missing words such as except, only, or until.
  • Spending the whole practice block on one difficult word rather than following the task timer.
  • Trying to predict your official score from how difficult the second module feels.

Your next practice session

Try a 15-minute study block: five minutes on word completion, five on a short notice, and five reviewing evidence for an academic question. This is a study allocation, not an official section timer. Label each error as vocabulary, grammar, evidence, or timing. Retry once, then choose a fresh task to check transfer.

Questions & answers

Should I learn every unfamiliar academic word?

Prioritize recurring words and useful word families. Practice working out meaning from context without stopping at every unfamiliar term.

Does a harder second module prove a particular score?

No. Fasiho practice routing is a simulation, and ETS scoring cannot be inferred from perceived difficulty alone.

Should I translate every sentence?

Try identifying the main point and relevant evidence directly in English. Translate an unclear phrase during review if it helps, rather than translating the whole timed passage.
