TOEFL iBT 2026 Speaking: repeat accurately and answer interviews clearly
Practice faithful repetition, direct answers, and understandable delivery with purposeful recording review.
Applies to: TOEFL iBT · 2026 task format
Know the task
The 2026 Speaking tasks are Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview. ETS lists 11 items and an approximate base section time of eight minutes. These tasks differ from the older integrated-speaking format. Follow the actual recording cues and response timer shown for each task.
A practical approach
- Listen and Repeat: focus on meaning groups and the exact wording. Retain small grammatical words and endings as well as the main nouns. Reproduce the sentence instead of paraphrasing it.
- Interview: answer the question in the first sentence. Add a reason and a specific supporting detail when appropriate. Let the question determine the structure rather than forcing every answer into the same template.
- Delivery: speak at an understandable pace, finish words clearly, and use pauses between ideas. Practice with the same microphone position each time so recording differences do not disguise progress.
Worked example: original Fasiho practice
Original repetition sentence: “The workshop has been moved to the room beside the main entrance.” Practice hearing it as three meaning groups: “The workshop / has been moved / to the room beside the main entrance.” During review, check that has been and beside did not disappear.
Interview prompt: “What helps you learn a new skill?”
Illustrative answer: “Short practice sessions help me most because I can concentrate on one problem at a time. When I learned to make presentations, I recorded a one-minute explanation each evening and changed one thing after listening.” This answers directly and supplies evidence without a long introduction. It is an example, not a scored benchmark.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting before the interviewer finishes or ignoring the recording cue.
- Paraphrasing a repetition sentence instead of repeating the words.
- Speaking faster to fit in a memorized introduction.
- Assuming an accurate transcript proves clear pronunciation or natural delivery.
Your next practice session
Record two repetition attempts and one fresh interview answer. Listen to the audio, then compare the repetition with its source text. For the interview, check relevance, development, and intelligibility separately. Retry once after identifying a specific change, then use a new prompt. Transcript-based feedback alone cannot assess pronunciation or delivery.
Questions & answers
Do I need a particular accent?
Focus on intelligible sounds, word stress, and natural phrasing rather than trying to imitate an unfamiliar accent.
Can I replace words during Listen and Repeat?
Practice reproducing the actual sentence faithfully. Summarizing its meaning is a different skill.
Can a transcript assess my pronunciation?
No. Listen to the recording and seek appropriate spoken-language feedback. A transcript does not capture all pronunciation, pacing, or delivery features.
